May is Older Americans Month

May is Older Americans Month, a month designated to raise awareness about issues facing older adults and to highlight the way older Americans are advocating for themselves, their peers, and their communities. Here at North Shore Health Care Center, we honor our seniors for sharing their wisdom and experience with us every day.

May 13-19 is designated as National Skilled Nursing Care Week –an opportunity to recognize the role of skilled nursing care centers in caring for America’s seniors and individuals with disabilities. We are very fortunate to have our beautiful new care center to provide opportunities for the elders of our community to participate in activities that enrich their physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

May will be a busy month at the Care Center with a lot of activity indoors and outdoors. The residents are anxious to get outside to enjoy some sunshine and start on our gardening projects. There will be games, reading groups, movies, and plenty of live music to fill our time indoors as well.

The residents are happy to welcome all kinds of visitors! Pictured here is Audrey Pollock cuddling with a 2-week-old puppy.

The monthly birthday party was held on May 9 at 3 p.m. to honor Jane Burley. Eleanor Waha’s delicious cake and ice cream was served and Doug Sanders was here to play our favorite tunes on the piano.

The Minnesota Fishing Opener is May 12. We plan to spend some time on the patio reminiscing about “the big one that got away,” and any other fishing tales the residents may want to share. Some tasty fish treats will also be served.

We are hoping for sunny weather on Memorial Day when we will have our first picnic of the year. There will be hot dogs right off the grill, along with potato salad, baked beans, and watermelon!

The annual Volunteer Appreciation Brunch will be held on Wednesday, May 23 at 10 a.m. The residents and staff want to acknowledge the many volunteers who have shared their time, talent, and friendship during this past year. We couldn’t provide the activities we offer without your help. You truly make our home a brighter place. You enrich the lives of our residents and help them keep connected to their community. Thanks for all you do!

We want to express our deep love and gratitude for one of our volunteers who passed away recently. Walt Mianowski was an avid volunteer at the Care Center for over 35 years, most recently as “Mr. Bingo,” faithfully coming every week to call bingo. We were able to enjoy his presence as a resident of North Shore Health Care Center for a brief time, and for that we are grateful. He had many friends here, and we will dearly miss him.

Cook County has a vibrant and active community of elders. Each week we will offer Senior News to highlight our senior citizens. This week’s submission is about the North Shore Health Care Center, courtesy of Activities Director Belinda Hudler.
