Above: Mike Sjogren gets ready for a pitch from the Barnum pitcher. Despite not hitting in the game—the Vikings only got two hits over seven innings—they won 4-3. Right: Looking like a young Nolan Ryan, Alex Murray pitched a great game against Barnum, giving up three hits and two earned runs while striking out seven batters.
The Cook County High School boys’ baseball team traveled to Two Harbors on Friday, April 27 to face the Two Harbors Agates and lost 7-1.
Errors cost the Vikings dearly. They committed six for the game and allowed Two Harbors to score despite a good pitching performance from Dylan Quaife. Quaife struck out six batters, allowed one earned run and gave up nine hits and no walks over five innings.
Two Harbors pitcher Sam Sostrom recorded nine strikeouts over seven innings. The score was 1-1 after the first inning and Cook County hung around until the Agates sealed the win with 3 runs in the sixth inning.
Colin Everson and Thomas Anderson were 2-3 at the plate. Quaife and Jacob Schroeder were each 1-3 at bat to lead Viking hitters.
On Tuesday, May 1, the Vikings faced the Barnum Bombers at home. The weather didn’t offer any sweet May Day baskets for the players, only a bouquet of cold, drizzly, damp weather. Nonetheless the kids played, and played well in the field.
Neither team could hit the ball. Barnum got three hits, one a big blow, a two-run home run by Jacob Naslund in the fourth inning, and Cook County got two hits, one a nice double by Kale Boomer who is back at shortstop after being out with injuries the past couple of games.
After a scoreless first inning the Vikings put two runs on the board in the second inning on a groundout by Thomas Anderson and an RBI single by Joe Borud. The Vikings scored one run in the third and fourth innings to go up 4-2. Barnum scored one run in the sixth inning on a wild pitch, but the Vikings closed out the Bombers 4-3 behind good pitching and good defense.
Alex Murray got the win for the Vikings. Murray allowed three runs over 5 2/3 innings, striking out seven, walking five and giving up two hits.
The Vikings record is now 2-4 in the conference and 2-5 overall. They rank 5th out of 9 teams.
On press time Thursday, May 3 the Vikings played Silver Bay in Silver Bay. The next night the Vikings play(ed) McGregor at home, also after press time.
The Vikings play Two Harbors at home on Tuesday, May 8 and then face the first place unbeaten Floodwood Polar Bears on Thursday at home. Games begin at 4 p.m.
