Mauer and Dorr both hit homeruns

Joe Mauer continues to be one of the leading hitters in major league baseball, combining an outstanding batting average with timely homeruns and RBI’s. In like manner, Cook County
News-Herald
columnist Mitch Dorr continues to combine an outstanding batting average of excellent column with timely “homerun” pieces that belong in the win column.

One such homerun column was Dorr’s recent column in the May 22, 2010 Herald,
entitled We have robbed
our kids of common respect.
He is to be commended for the risk-taking he does week after week, often expressing beliefs that he knows aren’t going to be popular because he is not patronizing or simply saying things that people want to hear.

For example, his comments in the May 22 editorial about the decline in respect that is shown by our young people today are things that aren’t popular but must be addressed. It should also be noted that when Mitch Dorr addresses a problem in his column, he doesn’t just present it and then walk away from it. He goes that crucial step beyond and offers a solution or multiple solutions to fix the problem and to make things better. He is truly a teacher and a coach.

Before closing, it is important to note that he not only has high moral standards, but he also lives by those standards. At the risk of using a cliché, Coach Dorr truly walks the walk. He is a positive mentor and role model for our young people.

As the month of May draws to a close, let’s hope that both Joe Mauer and Mitch Dorr continue to lead the way with their outstanding batting averages and timely homeruns. Theyare both MVP’s.
