Mattress catches fire at Spruce Glen Motel

Preparing motel rooms to open for the season led to a fire at Spruce Glen Motel at 10 p.m. on Tuesday, June 3, 2014.

Cook County Law Enforcement received a 911 call from Aspen Lodge, which manages the Spruce Glen Motel and is adjacent to the building, at 9:58 p.m. reporting that smoke was coming out of the back of the motel.

Sheriff Deputy Chuck Anderson was on scene by 10:02 p.m. and confirmed that a motel room on the eastern side of the building was filled with smoke. The Grand Marais Fire Department was on scene by 10:08 p.m. and discovered that the cause of the smoke was a smoldering mattress.

The mattress was removed and the fire extinguished. The building is primarily cement, so the fire did not spread to other units.

The room was unoccupied. The manager said the fire possibly started from use of a bug bomb.

All of the emergency responders were clear of the scene by 10:46 p.m.
