For Cook County eighth graders



These Cook County Middle School eighth graders have been working hard to participate in the Minnesota Math Counts program. A team consisting of Melanie Stoddard, Richie Furlong, Lars Scannell, and Daniel Ahrendt came in fifth place out of a field of 15 teams after a contest at UMD on February 10. These Cook County Middle School eighth graders have been working hard to participate in the Minnesota Math Counts program. On February 10, 2011, 15 teams from the Arrowhead chapter of the Minnesota Math Counts program sat at UMD and worked math problems, alone and together, for four hours. The Cook County Middle School team, made up of Melanie Stoddard, Richie Furlong, Lars Scannell, and Daniel Ahrendt, took home a respectable fifth place.

Our county can be proud of the 13 eighth-grade students who have been training for the competition every Wednesday at 12:30. They attack problems with enthusiasm and confidence, they communicate mathematically, and they’re very good. I know they will not grow up to tell their children, “It’s OK,
