The Silver Bay/Cook County Mariners hockey team entered its 2010-2011 season knowing that they would need skaters to step up on offense and in goal in order to compete. Their 11-1 pounding of rival Two Harbors on January 22 gave Bay fans a glimpse of both.
Rather than relying on a single forward to score goals, the Mariners have spread the scoring around this season. Shane Billings leads the team in scoring, but Warren Carter, Bradley Rowley, Tyson Fultz, Ryan Deshaw and Cody Larson all have more than 10 points on the season.
Six different Mariners scored goals in their recent win over Two Harbors.
The team began the season knowing that they would need an inexperienced goalie to step up and compete in order to win games. Neither Junior Sam Andrus nor eighth grader Alex Murray had ever started a varsity game. Sixteen games into the season it has been the younger Murray who has stepped up for the Mariners.
Murray stopped 28 of 29 shots in defeating Two Harbors, surrendering a single power play goal to Agates’ star Ben Ruberg in the first period. The young netminder has quietly put together a 6-5-1 record in his 12 starts, along with a 3.50 goals against average and .890 save percentage.
The Mariners’ record stands at 6-9-1 heading into the toughest part of the season. The team will face Virginia, International Falls, Lake of the Woods and Proctor over the next few weeks.
