Marie Spry returned to a position she is very familiar with when she was sworn in as a Grand Portage Tribal committeeperson in a brief ceremony in front of friends and family.
The oath of office was held on Tuesday at 5 p.m. in the parking lot of the of the Old Log Community Building.
In his first official act of duty, new Tribal Chair Robert (Bobby) Deschampe administered the oath of office to Spry.
Marie was a tribal councilperson for seven years, serving three years as tribal vice-chair, before taking over as interim tribal chair after the unexpected passing of long time Tribal Chair Norman Deschampe. Marie lost a bid for the Tribal Chair to Beth Drost in 2019 but will now return to office after defeating incumbent Rick Anderson in the recent election.
After being sworn in, Spry thanked everyone for coming out to witness the proceedings and promised she would do her best to help people in her new role. “I plan to work with Bobby and the other members of the RBC,” she said, and then thanked everyone who turned out to wish her well.
