Margaret Nelson Otterson, age 87, has joined her beloved husband Pete. Together in life, they are now reunited in death in God’s eternal Kingdom. She died at Methodist Hospital in the Twin Cities on September 3, 2009, following a brief illness.
Born in Minneapolis in 1921, Margaret grew up in Duluth. Her family began their yearly trek up the Gunflint Trail back in the ’30s. She met her husband Pete (Peder A. Otterson) at Duluth State Teachers College. Together, they raised a family of three boys and five grandchildren. Their love of adventure and the Canoe Country has been passed on to two generations.
Wherever they lived in the world from Kent, Ohio, where Pete was Professor of Aviation, to Karachi, Pakistan, where he worked with USAID to set up two technical schools and Margaret taught fifth grade, their hearts lay rooted in the North Country. Upon their return to the States, they purchased land at the end of the Gunflint Trail to build the family cabin. Pete took an early retirement in 1979 so they could divide their time between the cabin up north and their place down in Florida, to the joy of the grandchildren who loved to visit both. They were good friends with many at the end of the Trail.
There will be a memorial service
for Margaret where she lived at The
Colony, 431 Prairie Center Drive, Eden Prairie, MN 55344, on Sunday, September 27, 2009, at 2:00 p.m. Friends and family are welcome to attend.
Donations in lieu of flowers can be sent to the Gunflint Trail Historical Society of which she was a member. In time, her ashes will join with those of her husband Pete and granddaughter Kristina out on the point where the moccasin flowers grow up at the cabin. She is at peace.
