Margaret Elizabeth Carlson

Margaret Elizabeth Carlson was the sweetest, most caring, and generous person many of us have ever had the privilege to know. Even the many wild animals she cared for recognized her loving character, especially her chipmunks. Her life was not easy, but she persevered and overcame her challenges with persistence and grace.

She was a member of The Grand Portage Band of Ojibwe. She was born at home on the reservation on September 13, 1933, to Eleanor F. (Duhaime) Olson and Thomas Olson. She passed away peacefully on April 21, 2021, in her home surrounded by family.

Margaret was a hard worker and held many jobs. Her favorite job was working with her husband Rudolph “Red” Carlson, managing the family business, “Rudy’s Fish”, until his death in 1981. She also worked as a cook at the hospital where she developed many life-long friendships.

Margaret’s death was preceded by her daughters, Kathryne (Jim) Sipple, Julie (Tom) Andree, and son Russell Carlson. She is survived by her son Rudolph “Rooter” (Mary Kay) Carlson Jr. She was a grandmother to many: Melissa Chaffee, Andrea Carlson, Karah Moody, Greg Carlson, Jeff Carlson, Russ Carlson Jr., Brett Carlson, Tina Andree Ramacier, Tommy Andree, Bobby Andree, Jason Sipple, Barrett Chrissis, and Greg Arends. Her surviving siblings are her brother Ray Olson and her sisters, Lynn Tibbetts and Laura Radmer. She became a great-great-great grandmother on March 20, 2021, with the birth of Aubrey Chaffee.

Her family has decided to have a celebration of life towards the end of July in hopes of coming together safely.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that you feed your chipmunks, plant a flower, have coffee with a friend, and do something kind for someone.
