Marcy Emons Podas died July 4, 2020, at North Shore Health in Grand Marais, Minnesota, at the age of 98. She was born on September 22, 1921, to Louis and Harriet Emons in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She married Norman F. Podas Jr. on July 25, 1944. During WWII, Marcy held many different jobs supporting the war effort while Norm served in the army. They raised two daughters, Bonnie Gay and Jane. They lived in the Twin Cities and they had a home on Lake Superior in Grand Marais where they moved permanently after Norm retired in 2001.
A life-long learner and creator, Marcy was always interested in the next thing, something new to try and learn, never looking back or living in the past. She was an avid writer and leaves behind several books of her writing and poetry, as well as things she sewed, crocheted, or made by hand such as dolls and doll furniture. These things are a lovely legacy for her family.
The family is grateful for the loving kindness and care shown to Marcy by the staff at North Shore Health, as they had to be her family during the ongoing COVID-19 shutdown. We were able to meet with Marcy virtually so the family could see her and connect. She would smile and blow kisses while she could.
Marcy was preceded in death by her husband, Norman F. Podas, an infant daughter, and her sister Doris.
She is survived by daughters Bonnie Gay Hedstrom (Howard) of Grand Marais; daughter Jane Wolff (Peter) of Inverness, Florida; grandchildren Elizabeth (Betsy) Khan (Ishtiaq) of Minneapolis; Jonathan Hedstrom (Alyssa) of Grand Marais; Maeri Hedstrom and Jeffrey Niesen of Los Angeles, California; Great-granddaughters Ella, Liv and Thea Hedstrom; Rubina and Laila Khan; Nephews Steven Erickson (Marie), Dan and David Erickson.
Marcy was an energetic and adventurous grandmother to her four grandchildren. She was also able to enjoy time with her five great-granddaughters.
Burial will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in St. Paul, Minnesota. When possible, the family will plan a memorial and celebration of Marcy’s life. To share your memories or condolences online please visit www.cavallinfuneralhome.com.
