With the longer days and Daylight Saving Time just around the corner, the residents are looking forward to spring. In the meantime, we have a lot of activities planned for March.
With thoughts of spring, we have some fun gardening projects to look forward to. March 12 is “National Plant a Flower Day,” and the residents will be busy planting some flower seeds and playing a flower trivia game. With all the residents here who have “green thumbs,” it shouldn’t be long before we have an abundance of flowers to enjoy! Later in the month, we will be creating some flower shoes which should really get the creative juices flowing.
There will be some St. Patty’s Day festivities which include craft projects, “Pot of Gold” Bingo, and Hilja’s St. Patty’s Day Happy Hour with some delicious Irish snacks, and some St. Patrick’s Day trivia.
The monthly birthday party will be held on March 8 at 3 p.m. to honor Lorraine Wipson and Bob Heideman. Cake and ice cream will be served, along with some great piano tunes played by Doug Sanders.
We welcome back Pastor Darren Blank and friends on March 13 at 2 p.m. for another old-time gospel sing-along. Last month, the elders really enjoyed singing along to some of their old favorites.
Other music this month features Myron Bursheim on Sunday, March 19, Al Fuller on Mondays, and Susan Scherer on Wednesdays.
The Grand Marais Lioness Club will host their monthly social for residents on Saturday, March 18 at 3 p.m. with delicious treats for everyone. Irene Thompson will also be here to provide us with some wonderful piano tunes for all to enjoy. We send out special thanks to the ladies who provide the treats every month, and to Irene for the gift of music for the event.
We are hoping for a beautiful day on March 23 when we have an outing to the Senior Center for lunch and visiting with all our friends there.
A special thank you goes out this month to the Bethlehem Quilters who donated several new quilts for the residents’ rooms. We really appreciate the work and love they put into each unique quilt. The quilts truly add a touch of home to the Care Center!

Cook County has a vibrant and active community of elders. Each week we will offer Senior News to highlight our senior citizens. This week’s submission is about the North Shore Care Center, courtesy of Activities Director Belinda Hudler.
