Cook County Law Enforcement received a call from a Maple Hill woman at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, October 28 who said that her house was getting hot and there was a lot of smoke outside.
Both Maple Hill and Grand Marais fire departments responded to the fire at 307 county Road 60, the home of Bruce and Nancy Leonard. The Cook County Ambulance was also called to the fire in case of injury, but luckily none occurred.
Firefighters discovered smoke coming from the upstairs windows and the eaves on one side of the house. The occupants of the house were able to evacuate safely, and no one was injured in the blaze.
Firefighters soaked the house with water to put out the fire. Fire trucks traveled the two miles to the Devil’s Track River to fill the pumper trucks.
While the firefighters extinguished the flames, the house suffered extensive smoke, heat, and water damage.
The volunteer firefighters spent three hours battling and containing the fire before leaving the scene.
While no official report has been issued, it’s a possibility that the fire started in the roof near the wood stove.
