Regarding the story in the Nov. 9 issue, on the “Shop Local Saturday” business promotion, I have the following thoughts: Shopping really, really local can happen at the various holiday/ craft/art bazaar sales that occur in November and December in Cook County. These are opportunities to buy one-of-a-kind locally created items that are handmade. The range of items are food, clothing, household, jewelry, which are all giftable for the holidays or for oneself.
Such events are occurring Nov. 23 in Schroeder, Nov. 30 at Grand Marais Community Center, and Dec. 7 at the Art Colony and Evangelical Free Church. They are very much a way to shop local and keep dollars in local pockets and support local workers and families.
And…yet another way to shop local is at the various fundraising silent auctions, where the generosity of businesses that donate and the spending of local dollars gives support to worthy causes or community members. The auctions often accompany interesting and fun events like Empty Bowls, Birch Grove benefit or individuals with health challenges.
I think all of this shows how broad the idea of “shop local” can be and the worthwhileness of supporting all shop local opportunities, right down to the very simple businessperson—the creative individual.
