On Tuesday, July 20, citizens gathered at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts or tuned their radios to WTIP Community Radio at 7:00 p.m. to hear the 10 candidates for Cook County Board of Commissioner seats answer questions live for two hours.

Approximately 35 people came out to the ACA to watch and listen as WTIP’s Jay Andersen asked questions received before the program or via e-mail earlier. Nine candidates were seated at the dais, in alphabetical order, and Andersen read questions in a rotation, so everyone had a turn being the first, last, or middle panelist to answer.

Candidates in attendance were from both County Commissioner Districts up for election—District 3 and District 5.

In the District 3 race was Kay Costello, incumbent Robert “Bob” Fenwick, Sue Hakes, Keith Kuckler, Lloyd Speck, and Cathi Williams. Participating remotely by telephone was Garry Gamble.

In the District 5 race participants were Paul James, incumbent Bruce Martinson, and Diane Parker.

Candidates were allowed a twominute opening statement and then answered eight questions on topics ranging from management of Superior National golf course and the necessity of broadband to school funding and the county’s relationship with the Forest Service.

The election forum was sponsored by WTIP, Cook County
News-Herald,
and Cook County Community Education.

If you missed the forum, you can listen to it by checking out a recording on CD from the Grand Marais Library.

There is also another opportunity to ask questions of the candidates in District 3—on Monday, July 26, the Grand Marais Senior Center will be hosting a forum starting at 1:00 p.m. The forum will be moderated by Rhonda Silence of the Cook County
News-Herald.

Mail ballots for the primary election will be sent out on July 23. The county advises voters to get ballots in the return mail no later than 5 days before the election. Voters in Grand Marais will vote at the polls on Tuesday, August 10. Mail ballots may also be hand-delivered to the County Auditor’s office up until that day as well.
