For several months residents east of Grand Marais have been reporting sightings of a scrawny, mangy wolf. On Tuesday afternoon, April 26, Cook County Law Enforcement received a report of a dead wolf. It is believed it is the unhealthy animal that was seen in the area over the winter.
The reporting party was keeping an eye on their neighbor’s house and spotted the deceased wolf when they stopped to check on the property on the lakeside of Highway 61.
Cook County contacted the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and Conservation Officer Mary Manning visited the property and found the wolf ’s remains. Manning said, “It had very bad mange and I am sure it is the one I received calls on this winter, hanging around near Highway 61.”
Manning said it was an adult male wolf that appeared to have died from natural causes.
