Malcolm Anthony (Mally) Mercer passed on to the great reservation in the sky on June 2, 2014.
Malcolm was born March 9, 1935 to John and Frances (Beargrease) Mercer in Grand Marais. He attended Cook County schools and in his high school years was captain of the basketball team. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1953 and was honorably discharged in 1958.
He attended Greer Technical College in Chicago and worked many years as a diesel mechanic/heavy equipment operator. He worked several jobs throughout Cook County and the Twin Cities area. His most memorable employer was Edwin Thoreson in Grand Marais.
Malcolm was a member of the Grand Portage Band of the Lake Superior Chippewa and a member of the Grand Portage Legion Post 2009.
Malcolm is survived by his wife and best friend of 21 years, Donna; children Dorthy Lou Chenal, Rebecca (Mike) Adamczak, Curtis and Michael; stepsons Edward (Missy) Ullman, Anthony (Nan) Wellnitz; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sisters Teresa Funk, Viola Keyport (special friend Jim), Pat Skog; and many nieces and nephews. He will be sadly missed by his “pals” Ziggy and Zoe.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers John, Stuart, Doug, Harpo, Sherwood and Sherman, and sisters Winifred, Roxanne and Arlene.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. June 7 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Grand Portage. Private burial at Chippewa City Cemetery in Grand Marais.
