We recently spent two weeks in Texas. San Antonio to be precise with short stops in Dallas, Waco, and Austin. By we, I mean Mike, me, our niece Jaylynn and my parents, LaVonne and Art. We drove, Mike flew. I enjoy driving. Not necessarily for the scenery. I enjoy the conversations and the stops. Seeing new towns. Trying new foods. It’s all part of the experience and the memories. We tried Cinnamon Pecans. Not as sweet as expected and with a salty mix. Delicious. And though we arrive in Fredericksburg, Texas before the peach season the canned peaches we bought were as good as my mom made years ago.
When I think Texas, I think BBQ. I am a brisket lover from way back. My first trip to the great state was about 20 years ago for work. The clients insisted we try the brisket. It wasn’t at all what I expected. I thought it was fatty meat and I can only eat my bacon fried to a crisp. Fat is nothing I seek out. The first brisket I tried was lean, thin cut, and smokey. Honestly one of the best meals I have ever had. Served with a portion of creamy macaroni and cheese, comfort food doesn’t get much better. On this trip, I had brisket three times. I planned on having leftovers from one meal but a man on the sidewalk asked for it. How could I not share?
Seeing travel through the eyes of my parents and my niece was fun. We drove through snowstorms in three states. We went to a steel guitar convention in Dallas. Shopped thrift stores where a lizard clung to a hanger in the dressing area. Found a graduation dress in Waco. We went on an animal safari and fed ostriches and zebra from the van window. There was a boat ride on the Riverwalk and street tacos at the Mexican Village. They tried on cowboy hats. Mike and I saw Kaleo at the Austin City Limits and walked through the San Antonio Botanical Gardens. We went to the taping of America’s Ninja Warriors to watch an Annandale alumni compete.
My mom taught Jaylynn to bake bread while we played cards and I finally beat my dad, once, at a game of 3. Between you and me, I never win!
I enjoyed this break from the Minnesota cold but most of all I loved making memories with these people I love. I only wish all my friends and family could have been there too. Hugs and Peace, Sandy
“You say you’re not from Texas, Man as if I couldn’t tell, you think you pull your boots on right, and wear your hat so well, so pardon me my laughter, Because I sure do understand, Even Moses got excited, when he saw the promised land. That’s right you’re not from Texas, But Texas wants you anyway.” ~ Lyle Lovett
