Maintenance costs have been considered

I wish to express in a positive manner my support of the 1% Cook County sales tax rather than attacking misinformation I read in a couple of last week’s letters. Here are some of my reasons for support of this initiative:

We would be taking advantage of a one-time-only economic opportunity, our last chance to implement a locally controlled sales tax to make Cook County a better place to live. Broadband benefits would extend to the hospital and its patients, the schools, Higher Education, businesses and any individuals who would subscribe.

I certainly would be a subscriber who will welcome fast and reliable internet access. Benefits of this and the other six proposed projects would improve the lives of nearly all Cook County residents.

I have been door knocking for this initiative and have heard some concern about maintenance. My understanding is that the broadband will be maintained through subscriptions and that this is supported by a very solid business plan. It will not become a burden on the taxpayers because of the way it will be funded.

As for the cost of maintaining a community center/pool complex, I understand there likely will be uncovered expenses, but the probable loss will be less than it is with the current deteriorating pool structure, and the community will have a greatly improved facility.

I have faith in our elected officials to manage the project and I have hope that we the citizens will keep them accountable. I believe we must look to the future (and the future is now) for what will benefit this entire county. We should not forfeit this opportunity for revenue for which we can control the spending, revenue that is raised at a small cost to residents here.

Have you actually noticed the extra change in your pocket or purse since the 1% sales tax for the hospital stopped?

I would be happy to answer any of your questions or refer you to someone with more expertise to answer those I can’t. Feel free to call me at (218) 387- 1729.
