Mildred “Millie” Mainella, 101, of Grand Marais, is well known in Cook County. She grew up in Hovland and in 1941, she married a Civilian Conservation Corps foreman, Charles “Charlie” Mainella. She and Charlie lived in Hovland for many years where he ran the store and she served as postmaster for 26 years. In their retirement years, they spent winters in sunny Tucson, Arizona. After Charlie passed away in 1977, Millie moved to Grand Marais, where she lives today.
Many more people now know Millie—she was featured in April issue of EquiLine, a news magazine produced by the Equitable Life & Casualty Insurance Company. Carrie Hanson of EquiLine interviewed Millie for the magazine’s Senior of the Month feature. With the feature is a photo of Millie with the big birthday cake her friends at church made to celebrate her 100th birthday.
Hanson asked about the secret of living to be 101. Millie gave some sage advice, “Lead a clean life, take care of your health, try to stay happy and think positively. When you start thinking negatively say, ‘Get behind me!’ You’re going to have good and not so good days, but you can’t expect anything different.”
