Magnetic Rock Trail hike

On September 7 the Happy Hikers will travel 46 miles up the Gunflint Trail where we will hike across Larch Creek to Magnetic Rock. The trail passes through three major disturbances: the 1999 blowdown, 2002 prescribed burn, and the 2007 Ham Lake wildfire. Look for young jack pine and fire specialist woodpeckers. Magnetic Rock is a 60-foot rock with strong magnetic attraction. Bring your compass and test the magnetism.

Difficulty level: Easy to moderate.

Approximate distance: 3 miles.

Meet at the YMCA parking lot near the tennis courts at 9:00 am. We’ll carpool to the Magnetic Rock Trailhead, 46 miles up the Gunflint Trail. Suggested donation for drivers: $3. Well-behaved dogs are welcome, on a leash.

Afterwards, we will head into Tuscarora Lodge & Outfitters to use their bathrooms and picnic area for lunch.

What to bring: Hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, sturdy hiking shoes/boots, hiking poles, water, and a sack lunch.

If it’s raining, the hike will be cancelled. For more information, contact Carol Morgen, 715-377-2526.
