The January/February edition of the Minnesota Conservation Volunteer magazine has a nice feature titled “Snowmobiles, Snowshoes and Big Brook Trout,” written by Michael Dvorak.
Julie Collman, her dog Blue, and her husband Bob Baker took Dvorak brook trout fishing in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA) last March. Dvorak does an excellent job capturing the adventure with 14 photographs and some sublime text.
It seems Julie and Dvorak have been fishing buddies for some time. Dvorak said the two typically set a fishing date and then began sending each other names of lakes they have been researching on the Department of Natural Resources Lakefinder website. They comb stocking reports and netting surveys in an attempt to find lakes that host big brookies.
For this trip, they leaned heavily on Bob Baker for advice, writes Dvorak, noting that Bob, a longtime fishing guide on the Gunflint Trail, knows where to find big brook trout.
If you want to see how they did, the MCV magazine can be picked up in local stores.
As far as the lakes they fished, if you have spent time in the BWCA, you can pretty much pick out the lakes, but they aren’t (thankfully) named in the article.
