Fans of Cook County High School sports know that Madison “Maddy” Roy, a senior, is an outstanding volleyball and softball player, but many don’t know that Maddy played hockey during the winter.
Roy has spent the last five winters traveling to practice in Silver Bay and Two Harbors to play on the combined North Shore Storm high school girls’ hockey team.
A defenseman, Roy laced up her skates the first three years with Silver Bay and the last two years with the combined Silver Bay/ Two Harbors/Cook County squad. Her mother, Susan Roy, estimates that Maddy traveled about 13,500 miles in a season (November to early February).
Roy was a starter four of the five years, and although she wasn’t a flashy high scoring defenseman she was voted a captain her senior year. And, additionally, at the end of the season Maddy was awarded her team’s Hobey Baker award for her overall outstanding play.
“I definitely didn’t score a lot of goals in my career, maybe five overall. But I did have a lot of assists and I definitely played a lot of minutes, especially when we were short girls,” Roy said.
A lot of Maddy’s success in hockey came because of the sacrifices her parents made, especially her father, Jim. “My father is a plow driver for the state. He would get up at 2 a.m. then plow sometimes until noon, come home and take a short nap and then take me to practice,” said Maddy. “When he was driving I would do my school work. If I couldn’t have kept up with school, I would had to quit hockey,” Roy said.
As good as Maddy has been on a variety of playing fields, she’s been even better in the classroom, carrying a GPA (grade point average) of 4.036, which is higher than an A (4.0) average.
This year Maddy is enrolled in A.P. Calculus, a college English course and a college economic class. She hopes to start her freshman year at the University of Wisconsin–La Crosse with 12 college credits under her belt.
When asked if she will play sports in college, Roy responded, “La Crosse doesn’t have a girls’ hockey team. I might go out for the volleyball team, or play on a club or intramural team. There are different levels of intramurals at La Crosse A, B, C, depending on your skill level. One way or the other I will definitely play sports, either volleyball or softball. I’m going to college first to get an education, but I can’t see myself sitting around. I need to be active.”
