Cook County High School sophomore Sean MacDonell capped off his fine cross country ski season with a 33rd place at the Section 7A cross country ski meet held February 7 at Giants Ridge.
“Sean improved about 20 places from last year,” said Head Coach Adam Harju, adding, “He had a really good meet. He worked hard in the off-season and he’s talented. It will be fun to see how he does next year.”
Will Seaton also finished his year with a good place at sections. The sophomore placed 54th and senior Joey Chmelik was right behind in 57th place.
On February 10, two sisters, Linnea and Robin Henrickson, traveled to Spirit Mountain to compete in the Junior Varsity and Junior High Nordic championships.
“Both girls skied well at the meet,” Harju said.
In the girls’ junior varsity championships, Linnea, an eighth-grader, placed 14th while Robin, a sixth-grader, finished second in the Junior High Championships.
Although the kids had plenty of snow this year, their season was marked by extreme cold and wind, which often resulted in cancelled meets or practice.
“I thought the kids did great considering everything. It was tough with all of the cold weather. We missed a lot of meets because of the weather and at most races it was 5 degrees below zero. That’s tough to race in when it’s that cold. Overall the kids did very well. We have some talent coming up, so it should be fun to see how they fare in the coming years,” said Coach Harju.
