Cook County High School junior Sean MacDonell placed 102 out of 163 racers in the 5.3K free style race held at Giants Ridge on Saturday, January 10. Coming in with a time of 19:59, it was MacDonell’s first race of the year. MacDonell was the only Cook County varsity competitor in this race.

“The free style course at Giants Ridge is one of the most difficult courses our skiers will see during the season, with multiple steep climbs and aggressive terrain,” said Nordic Head Coach Tim Dennison. “Sean finished strong and felt he left it all on the course.”

Hosted by Mesabi East, more than 1,000 skiers from Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan attended and raced in the nation’s largest high school cross country ski meet.

The event featured both classical and freestyle races for boys and girls.

Also participating were former Cook County high school skiers Joe Rauzi and Will Seaton for Duluth East and Pete Summers, skiing for Marshall.
