Sean MacDonell’s reward for winning the 2011 Cook County Middle School Geography Bee in January 2011 was another challenge. MacDonell took the National Geographic Society written test and earned a spot as Minnesota Geographic Bee semifinalists. MacDonell will be heading to St. Cloud State on Friday, April 1, where he will compete against the students with the top 100 scores in the state.
MacDonell, who also competes on the Cook County Knowledge Bowl team, said that training overlaps his geography bee training. Asked just how he studies, he said he browses atlases and National Geographic magazine. “Most of the stuff, I’ve learned in this class,” he said, referring to Dorie Carlson’s social studies/ geography class.
Is MacDonell worried about facing unknown competitors at St. Cloud State? “No, there will probably be less pressure,” he said with a grin. “I don’t know the other kids there.”
Congratulations on being a semifinalist and good luck, Sean!
