At the October 18, 2011 town meeting Fire Chief Paul Goettl and Assistant Fire Chief John Groth were happy to announce that the Lutsen Fire Department had just picked up its new fire truck, a tactical tender, built by Rosenbauer/South Dakota Division. Before and after the meeting, town supervisors and citizens stopped by the fire garage to see the shiny new truck.
The cost of the tactical tender was $175,292. The majority of the expense was paid by a 2010 FEMA Assistance to Firefighters grant of $152,594. The remaining funds—$22,698—came from the fire department budget.
“So because of the FEMA grant, the township paid about $23,000 for a truck worth $152,594. That is a pretty good deal for taxpayers,” said Assistant Chief Groth, who is also treasurer for the Town of Lutsen.
Emergency vehicle operations training was held on Saturday, October 22, with members of the fire department getting to practice driving the new fire rig. Jon Olson of Mesabi Range Technical College conducted the training.
