While only 14 people attended the annual Lutsen township meeting, 103 people voted in the election for officers.
Judy Motchenbacher was elected to moderate the meeting.
When the votes were tallied, Lollie Cooper received 52 votes to incumbent supervisor Andrew Beavers 50 votes in the race for the three-year supervisor seat.
Colleen Brennan received 88 votes for the one-year township supervisor position.
Sharon Hexum Platzer, who was running for re-election as town clerk, garnered 91 votes for a two-year term. And, in the election for treasurer, when no one would run, Ashley VanDoren stepped up to plate and received 61 write-in votes to become the new Lutsen township treasurer. This is a one-year term and former treasurer Paul Goettl agreed to help Ashley learn the duties of the position.
The proposed 2021 levy for Lutsen is $212,350, but it won’t be certified until the mid-August continuation of the annual meeting. That way, if an unexpected expense comes up, the levy can be adjusted to cover that expense.
A decision was made to combine the firefighters and EMS squad’s budgets. That way, the town clerk won’t have to write out as many checks. Many people are members of both units, and now those people will receive one check instead of two separate checks.
A discussion was held about allowing a Bone Builders class to use the town hall for free. The class has grown from five to 13 people and has outgrown space provided by a local church. It was agreed that Bone Builders could use the area because it promotes health, promotes community, and no one makes any money from running the classes.
Cook County Commissioner Ginny Storlie attended the meeting and gave the same information she presented to the other two townships. That information can be found in the Schroeder township report.
