Tom Christiansen of Last Chance Studio and Gallery is moving on to a semi-retired lifestyle and selling the studio to Greg Mueller. Mueller, a sculptor originally from Mankato, will be creating his work in the studio and foundry built in 1999. The gallery operated on the site by Marcia Hyatt for the past dozen years is closing its doors January 27.
Mueller, a professional sculptor, college professor and former assistant to Paul Granlund creates most of his work from re-purposing materials. Mueller combines the disciplines of metal fabricating and bronze casting. Current projects include a sculpture for the Fergus Falls Central Lakes Bike Trail, Canteen Alley’s Water Reclaim Project in Ottumwa, Iowa and a sculptural bike rack for St. Paul’s McQuillan Park.
Christiansen will continue to work at his new studio at home in Lutsen. Gallery artists will be moving to other local galleries. Mueller will maintain the sculpture garden and be adding his own work to the outdoor exhibit. He also will be hosting pop-up art events and Christiansen and Mueller will continue to hold occasional public bronze pours.
“Now that the store is closed Marcia and I will have more time to get away in the winter,” added Tom.
