Lutsen pancakes a fall tradition

For 18 years, the Lutsen Volunteer Fire Department has been sponsoring a Fall Pancake Breakfast. This year’s event will be held in the new Lutsen Town Hall at the corner of Highway 61 and the Caribou Trail on Sunday, September 21 from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

Visitors can expect a hearty breakfast of pancakes made with former firefighter/chef Sonja Helland’s delicious secret recipe, real maple syrup from local maple syrup producers, eggs, bacon, and sausage. Along with the great food is the good company of friends and neighbors from all over the county, who know that this is a breakfast not to be missed.

Over the years the breakfast has netted thousands of dollars for the Lutsen Fire Relief Association, which benefits the volunteer firefighters. The firefighters decide how the proceeds of the pancake breakfast should be used. In the past, money raised has been used to meet a variety of equipment needs for the department, such as for a television for training and for emergency vehicles. Proceeds have also been donated to the Red Cross after the 9/11 tragedy, Hurricane Katrina as well as for a scholarship for local graduates pursuing a career in emergency services. Proceeds from last year’s pancake breakfast went toward an additional fryer to increase the number of filets that can be cooked at the annual West End 4th of July celebration in Tofte— another event put on by the Lutsen firefighters.

Stop by and enjoy a delicious pancake breakfast, check out the new Lutsen Rescue truck and other equipment, and say “thanks” to the hardworking men and women of the Lutsen Volunteer Fire Department.
