Amity Goettl tendered her resignation as Lutsen Town Clerk at the board’s August 16 meeting. If you live in Lutsen and have some office skills, the position is open as of now.

Saying her new job at the Cook County Law Enforcement Center was taking up more of her time than expected, Lutsen Town Clerk Amity Goettl presented the board with a letter of resignation at the board’s meeting on August 16.

The board asked Assistant Clerk Jenny Kartes if she was interested in filling the clerk’s duties and she said, “I am already working two jobs and I’m expecting. I can’t do anymore work right now.”

Goettl said she could continue to help the township for the next month, but added that the board would need to find her replacement as soon as possible.

Supervisor Diane Parker thanked Goettl for her work, “You have done a great job and I’m going to miss you,” said Parker.

The board accepted Goettl’s resignation with regrets.

Fire Chief Paul Goettl said his crew had responded to two calls this past month, one a cabin fire and one a carbon monoxide check.

Emergency Services Director (EMS) Fred Schmidt said his department had “three or four calls since last month.”

Supervisor Diane Parker said that she had attended an Arrowhead Regional Development Council meeting on July 21 and was told, “There’s no funding for much anymore. The Scenic Byway Committee said when the work is done at Cascade River there will be no more money for improvements up and down the shore.”

Parker was asked if this meant there would be no more money for the bike path, and Commissioner Bruce Martinson said those funds were in a different account and would still be available when work resumed on Highway 61.

Treasurer John Groth said he has applied for a FEMA grant that will be used to purchase new fire fighting equipment and a rescue truck. “Our gear is 15 years old, at least. We need new boots, helmets, gloves, coats, pants etc. at a cost of $2,400 per person. We have 15 people we need gear for.”

So far Lutsen has received $271,327 in Assistance to Firefighter FEMA grants since 2007, with $152,594 of that coming in 2010.

Groth also asked Martinson if the county highway department was going to fix a washed out culvert and shoulder of Caribou Road as had been requested. Martinson said he would speak to the county engineer to see when the work would be completed.
