Lutsen Mountains is looking to its fans to help name two new double-black diamond slopes opening this season.
Jim Vick, marketing manager of Lutsen Mountains, was a featured guest on KARE 11’s Sunrise morning show Oct. 18 and was interviewed as part of the Mall of America Ski Expo taking place that weekend.
Everyone who enters the contest is eligible to win a three-day, three-night ski vacation at Lutsen Mountains. The person(s) who enters the winning name will receive a free season pass for the 2013-14 season.
The new slopes are part of a $20 million investment that has improved the skiing and snowboarding experience at Lutsen. The two new runs, located near The Plunge on the North Face of Moose Mountain, add to the appeal for advanced skiers and adrenaline junkies.
The two runs have different features and will be named separately. One run features a similar drop to The Plunge, a steep drop-off that poses a test of skill for even the most avid skiers. In the past, The Plunge has posed a problem for snow groomers, but new technology has changed that. “New snowmaking and grooming technology allows us to create steeper runs for our guests looking for a daring day on the slopes,” said Charles Skinner, co-owner of Lutsen Mountains.
Names for the two new runs may also be submitted at www.lutsen.com/northface. The winning names will be announced Nov. 10.
Lutsen Mountains is the largest and highest ski area in Mid-America offering four interconnected mountains, 95 runs and 820 feet of lift-serviced vertical rise, all spread over 1,000 acres. Lutsen Mountains is also home to a number of resort, dining, shopping and entertainment options.
Lutsen Mountains is co-owned by brothers in-law Charles Skinner and Tom Rider, whose family has owned and operated the ski area since 1980. More information is available at www.Lutsen.com
Additional improvements over the past 10 years at the mountain range include:
. Caribou Express, a new high-speed lift on Moose Mountain that will triple skiers’ and snowboarders’ slope time. The lift will reduce time to the top of the mountain from 10 minutes to about 3½ minutes.
. New runs, including acres of tree skiing, several new terrain parks and new expert terrain.
. New snowmaking technology that produces more snow in less time with significant reduction in both energy and water consumption. It also helps to create peak conditions for skiing and snowboarding.
. Papa Charlie’s: a slope-side dining and music venue that books first-class local and national acts.
. Summit Chalet: featuring opulent mountaintop dining with a world-class view. It has become a favorite spot for weddings in the summer months.
. Investments in the Lutsen streetscape, including a pedestrian bridge, new sidewalks, streetlamps and paved curbside parking making coming and going a safer and more enjoyable experience for guests.
