A Lutsen man apparently fell asleep and crashed into the ditch west of Isak Hansen Hardware in Lutsen on Highway 61 on Tuesday, June 23.
Todd Kager, 45, was traveling west at 1:40 p.m. on Highway 61 in a 2004 Toyota 4-Runner when according to the Minnesota State Patrol, he veered off the road in Lutsen, hit a driveway embankment and went airborne.
Lutsen Fire Department and Lutsen First Responders were paged and were on scene by 1:57 p.m. Cook County Ambulance was paged and was on scene by 2:05 p.m. Kager was transported to the hospital for nonlife threatening injuries. He was wearing his seatbelt and the airbags in the 4-Runner deployed.
Kager told the State Patrol that he had fallen asleep.
Sheriff deputies and Lutsen Fire Department personnel conducted traffic control while one lane of Highway 61 was blocked. All emergency responders were clear from the scene at 3:24 p.m.
The Toyota was totaled and it was towed by Cook County Towing.
