Lutsen 99er racers fight through rain, mud

And they are off! Racers in the Lutsen 99er got to start by coasting downhill for a about a mile before they quickly found rain slicked muddy trails they navigated as they made their way back to the finish line. Despite the inclement weather, the winning times were once again very fast for the four mountain bike races held at this year’s Lutsen 99er.

Some 1,800 riders took part in the demanding mountain bike races over the hilly Lutsen Mountain terrain on Saturday, June 24.

Corey Stelljes of Madison, Wis. finished the 99-mile race in 5:36:01, averaging 17.68 miles per hour. Linda Jurek, executive director of Visit Cook County said, “Considering that the course gains and loses over 7,000 feet of vertical, that is an incredible pace to maintain!”

Top male and female finishers in the 69-mile race were Josh Molnar, Wayzata, Minnesota, 4:06:04 and Ronnie Wick, Iron River, Wisconsin, 5:02:25.

Paul Nelson of Cameron, Wisconsin placed first in the men’s 39-mile race with a time of 2:19:18. Madeline Aprin, Minneapolis, was first across the line for women with a time of 2:42:18.

Just before the 99er mountain bike racers left the line the announcer asked the riders to raise their hands if they had raced with or been teammates with the 2015 winner, Steve Tilford. Tilford, age 59, was killed on April 5, 2017 in Utah when the van he was driving struck an overturned semi that blocked the road. Tilford left his vehicle and was then struck by another semi, which killed him and the driver of that truck, which ran into the first overturned vehicle.
