North Shore sawyers are a somewhat solitary group, but Fisherman’s Picnic Lumber Camp coordinator Niel Atkinson hopes to entice them out of the woods for the Husqvarna and Steve’s Sports Stocksaw Contest on Friday and Saturday, August 3-4.
The head-to-head competition with Husqvarna 576XPs and lathe turned 20” white pine, has more divisions than ever, such as a mixed doubles faceoff. There is a lot of prize money up for grabs—$1,500 in prizes and a brand-new Husqvarna 235 chainsaw for the fastest man and this year, the fastest woman on the chainsaw.
Pre-registration would be appreciated, however, sawyer registration begins at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, August 3 and the contest begins at 7:00 p.m. sharp. Competition is at the Fisherman’s Picnic Lumber Camp on Wisconsin Street in Grand Marais. The mixed double contest will be held on Saturday at 12:45 p.m. right before the crosscut contests.
Anyone with questions on qualification is asked to call Atkinson at (218) 388- 0899 or e-mail niela@boreal.org. Entries (including name, address, phone number and saw experience) may be mailed to: Niel Atkinson, 80 S. Clearwater Road, Grand Marais, 55604. Checks payable to Clearwater Logging.
Atkinson said, “We are looking for a qualified, safe and competitive field. We are looking for the best of the North Shore. Come out and join the fun.”
To the public, he added, “Cheer on your favorite sawyer!”
Atkinson said the chainsaw contest and all the other exciting activities at Lumber Camp would not be possible without the help of event major sponsors Central Boiler Outdoor Furnaces and Wood- Mizer Portable Sawmills. Other event sponsors are Husqvarna Outdoor Power Equipment, Minnesota Army National Guard, Steve’s Sports, Midwest Cabling and Communications, Nace Hagemann Construction Wildfire Protection Systems, MMT Heating and Cooling, Marine General, Lutsen Real Estate Group, Lutsen Lodging Company, Studio 61 Hair Salon, Clearwater Lodge and Outfitters, Hedstrom Lumber Company, Circle H Timber, Clearwater Logging.
