Come on out for Fisherman’s Picnic Lumber Camp—you could be among the elite such as last year’s winners. Colee Johnson of Hovland (center) won a brand-new Husqvarna in the 2010 Steve’s Sports/Husqvarna stock saw contest. Second was Dennis Burton (right) and third was Tom Stockman.
Not only is the Fisherman’s Picnic Lumber Camp coming back, it is bringing greater opportunity for local sawyers to demonstrate their skills with a Husqvarna 576XPs and lathe turned 20” white pine. This head-to-head competition has been expanded, with more divisions than ever, such as a mixed doubles faceoff. And there is more prize money up for grabs—$1,500 in prizes and a brand-new Husqvarna 235 chainsaw for the fastest man and this year, the fastest woman.
Qualified competitors are professional loggers, Forest Service or DNR, tree service professional, professional lumberjack, line clearing crews, fire crews, timbersport competitors and/ or experienced saw operators. Atkinson said, “We are looking for a qualified, safe and competitive field. We are looking for the best of the North Shore. Come out and join the fun.”
To the public, he added, “Cheer on your favorite sawyer!”

Sawyer registration begins at 6:00 p.m. on Friday August 5 and the contest begins at 7:00 p.m. sharp. Competition at the Fisherman’s Picnic Lumber Camp on Wisconsin Street in Grand Marais. The mixed double contest will be held on Saturday at 12:45 p.m. right before the crosscut contests.
