Lots of activities and the coffee’s always on at Senior Center

Brighter side of aging

You can become an active and involved member of Cook County’s senior community just by putting all of the Senior Center events and activity possibilities together. Scrabble, wii bowling, flexibility exercising or a casino trip— you can do any or all of these things during August at the Senior Center.

Trip news:
The Agawa Canyon/Sault St. Marie Trip on August 30 – September 3 has three spots left. Cost includes transportation, lodging, tour train ticket and two continental breakfasts. Trips are scheduled to Grand Portage Casino on the second Monday of each month. The bus stops at the Heritage Center, National Monument and at the Community Center. An overnight trip is planned to Fortune Bay Casino and Hotel in Tower, MN on August 23-24. For more information and to make reservations call the Senior Center, 218-387-2330.

If leaving the county isn’t your thing just head down to the Center where Monday – Friday you can have lunch for $3.50 ($6.50 for guests under 60) and be involved in some activity. Wii bowling is on the schedule for Mondays; trivia and Scrabble on Tuesday; exercise Wednesday; cribbage and bingo on Thursday; and Friday ends the week with another exercise group and duplicate bridge. To join any of these events all you have to do is show up except for duplicate bridge.

For bridge, please contact Warren Anderson at (218) 387-2365 for information.

On August 24, the memoir writer’s group welcomes everyone at 9:30 a.m. to share their writing or to learn about memoir writing. On any of these days there is coffee made and in the mornings, treats at Becky’s breakfast café.

Senior health is monitored at two blood pressure clinics on Aug. 4 and 11, with a Foot Care Clinic being held on Tuesday, Aug. 17.

Special lunchtime speakers for August include the Vets Service Officer, the Cook County Historical Society, and Sheriff Mark Falk. On Thursday, August 19 there will be a Fall Harvest Days Luncheon with line dancing entertainment.

You don’t even have to drive to do all of this! The availability of bus service is often overlooked. You can get to the Senior Center, Grand Portage or Duluth by using our local bus service. An unlimited rides monthly pass is only $20. The Arrowhead Bus Service runs anywhere within five miles of Grand Marais, Monday – Friday 9:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. and on the first and third Saturday of each month. Everyone rides free on the first and third Friday (courtesy of Grand Marais State Bank) and if you are 90 years or over you can ride free anytime! The bus travels to Grand Portage daily and to Duluth on August 10 and 26. Cost varies for Portage and Duluth trips. We are fortunate to have such good bus service as close as a phone call to Mark Quello at (218) 370-1515.

Call the Senior Center at (218) 387-2660 before 9:30 a.m. to register for lunch and/or for more information, dates and times of any of the August events. Or just walk in, the coffee is always on.
