Lots happening at the Senior Center

What is happening at the Senior Center? As I try to determine what is of interest to our community and timing of events, I am finding a few events that are attracting attention.

One of those is our quilting class. Last month we started out with a lap Windmill Scrap Quilt. Continuing with quilting classes this month, I am offering a new class called Fall Leaf Table Runner, and it will start on Wednesday, Aug. 30 at 1 to 4 p.m. This class will introduce you to batiks and paper piece applique. Another craft day will be on Friday, Aug. 18 at 1 p.m. for our Domino Pendant. Come and learn how to use alcohol ink and resin to make a beautiful pendant. This is a one-day craft day, so it may be perfect to fit into your busy schedule.

Moving into health-related topics, a presentation from a North Shore physical therapist on tips and techniques to help prevent falling will be at the Senior Center on Thursday, Aug. 17 at 1 p.m. Sometimes our health changes and we find how we used to do things just isn’t working, so having some additional tools to help us navigate is not a bad idea. Once again we will feature a Medicare presentation to help newcomers navigate paperwork, understand how Medicare can help you and have information that would be helpful in doing this. Marjorie Bottila from Senior Linkage will also schedule individual appointments for Medicare information on that day; however, you must call ahead to her office (1-800-333-2433) for those appointments.

There’s no prettier dining room than the one at Naniboujou, and the food is great too! In the front row from left to right are Tom Hedstrom, Betty Michaud, Darrellyn Barrett, Geri Jensen, Kaye Kraft, Fred Schmidt, Kim Nelson and Nancy Dumas.

Monthly we offer our trips to the Grand Portage Casino, one day trip, and one evening trip. When our registration reaches 12 participants, our participants are given an additional incentive – $5 free slot play, plus $5 off any entree or sandwich in the dining room. You must have a casino card to participate, not to worry – you may sign up for one upon arrival. This month our day trip will be Wednesday, Aug. 30 at 9:45 a.m. and returning to the center at 2:30 p.m. Our evening trip will be Aug. 16 at 4:15 p.m. and return to the center at 9 p.m.

Are you a book lover? We are starting a book club at the Senior Center. This is our first month, and we are reading The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend by Katarina Bivald. I practically devoured this book. It is one of those books with a different plot, which is refreshing when you read as many books as I do! There is still time for you to join us on Thursday, Aug. 24 at 1 p.m. to discuss this book. We will be meeting at the Senior Center.

Do you love children as much as I do? I miss my grandchildren who reside in Arkansas, so I have adopted a group of little ones that I have been working with for the past year on crafts. When I took this job, I did not want to leave them behind. I thought I could share them with my friends at the center. I need helpers who would like to help them with their weekly crafting project. This month we will have a picnic together and then start a crafting project on Thursday, Aug. 31 at 1 p.m. at the Senior Center. Give me a call at the Senior Center (218-387-2660), and I can give you more details about this endeavor.

Bob Pratt (L) and Rick Anderson were two of many who attended the Old Timer’s Gathering at 10 a.m. on August 4th at the Cook County Senior Center. Scrapbooks filled with pictures of people and places from years gone by were laid out on tables and perused by the folks who showed up to remember and reminisce about days past.

I just wanted to remind you, that we do not have membership dues at the Senior Center. Apparently, some communities do! Also, don’t hesitate to take part in an event if you are not “senior age” which nowadays, that fluctuates wherever you go! If the project is one that you think would be of interest, sign up for it. Who knows, you might find a new hobby or a new set of friends! Some if not all of the events are in demand, so who wouldn’t want to be part of them? Some classes/ events do have limited space so please call.

As always, if you have some suggestions for classes/ events, I am all ears…give me a call, and I can arrange for it to happen.

Cook County has a vibrant and active community of elders. Each week we offer Senior News to highlight our senior citizens. This week’s submission is about the Cook County Senior Center, courtesy of Programs and Service Coordinator Kim Nelson.
