The Elders held their St Patrick’s Day bingo and stew cook-off on March 21, the first full day of spring. Thirteen stews were entered and after all was tasted and judged, Rick Johnson was the winner.

Rick was lucky that night, also winning the 50/50 raffle. He split the pot with the Elders and received $118.50. The other winners of the night were Marie Morrin in the half time turkey and Janice Deschampe in the cover-all. They won a complete Easter dinner with ham and all the fixings. Congratulations to all the winners and Chi Miigwech to everyone who donated meat, stews, prizes and time. A special Miigwech to the RTC for the wonderful prizes of cookware they donated.

The Elder Nutrition Program (ENP) had an informative and very interesting presentation on Delaying Aging by Physical Therapist Treg Axtell. He shared ideas and written information on exercising and aging. He talked about how a regular exercise program can help delay aging. We learned that maintaining aerobic fitness through middle age could delay biological aging by 12 years. Wow!

So let’s get out there and walk, bike, swim, lift weights, garden, do housework—anything where we move. I guess the old adage “use it or lose it” is true.

The ENP offers regular opportunities to exercise through weekly chair exercise, Wisdom Steps and water aerobics. Please give Carol Hackett or Patty Winchell-Dahl a call at (218) 475-2655 for more information about these or any other program offered through the ENP.

We have started sewing a quilt to be raffled off at the Elders Pow- Wow this May. Sewing is after lunch on Wednesdays and everyone is welcome. Time is short so if you enjoy sewing, please come and help.

Tess Bailey, our nutrition specialist, came to lunch this month and gave another presentation on What is Nutrition? Great information and Tess always brings the most interesting and useful gifts. This time we received a scale to be used for portion control. This month was the Magic of Oats.

Our director had training in Duluth and Doris Blank was able to travel with her and visit her sister Millie, who lives at Bay Shore. Millie’s daughter Brenda also joined her mom and aunt for a wonderful visit. Everyone had a great time.

April is shaping up to be a busy month. We will continue with our regular activities but there are some special opportunities available. A wonderful tool for caregivers will be a six-week class taught by Jeannette Lindgren from Care Partners. This course will give you tools to be able to thrive and not just survive as a caregiver. For more information call (218) 387-3788.

Also, this month there will an afternoon training on April 24 from 1 – 4 p.m. through the Hospice Foundation on Improving Care for Vets Facing Illness and Death. Again for more information, call (218) 387-3787.

Marjori Bottila will be here April 25 with an evening presentation on the Affordable Care Act, Medicare Part A-D and Protecting ourselves from Fraud, Scams & ID Theft. Anyone interested should call the ENP for rides.

The 13th Wisdom Steps Conference will be in White Earth this year at the Shooting Star Casino on June 11 – 13. Anyone planning to participate must have his or her $20 registration fee and health records to Carol Hackett by April 9 to attend. If you have questions, contact Carol at 475-2655.

You will see a new face at the ENP in April. Our cook, Polly James, will be out after rotator cuff surgery. While she is recuperating Dama Vondal will be filling in as the cook’s helper, while Cedar Denny takes over for Polly. We wish Polly a speedy recovery and give Dama a warm welcome.
