Lots happening at Birch Grove Community Center

I guess I do not need to inform anyone that winter is here! The sandals are done for the season. The outdoor chores that were not done will be here in the spring. Now it will be a good time to participate in the upcoming holidays, shoveling and more shoveling. I think the bears have the right idea, hibernating sounds good to me.

Senior Lunch every Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. has been and continues to be a welcome and wonderful meal. There has been significant participation with an average of 25 – 32 people joining us for Barb’s great food and social time. All get a chance to visit and catch up on the local news, events, and announcements. See the menu posted on Boreal Community Calendar. If you are not a regular yet, please call in advance 218- 663-7977.

The Nail/Foot Care Clinic is still available for the winter. Sawtooth Mountain Clinic provides this service. We have increased participation; the word is spreading regarding what a wonderful treat it is to have “feel good feet.” The service is offered the third Wednesday of the month, with appointments starting at 12:30 p.m. You must make a reservation by Tuesday at 4 p.m. Please bring a foot basin, towel and $10 cash.

It’s never too late to prepare for the Olympics. Or to get in shape for a little stroll around the block. Here, two excellent strapping athletes, Skip Lamb (left), and Steve Michaud are pressing some pretty impressive weights over their head while they rigorously stepped up and down on a mat. The two were working out at the Birch Grove Community Center workout room the other day.

The Pickle Ball group is trying to meet on Thursday or Saturday mornings from 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. Please contact Carroll Peterson at 612-377-8748 or e-mail carrollpeterson3435@yahoo.com who is always looking for new players to join this active fun.

Caregiver Coffee is meeting the second Friday of each month from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. This is an informal talk and information session for those in the position of being a caregiver. It helps to get together with others to share your feelings and knowledge.

We had a presentation given by Cook County Sheriff Pat Eliasen on November 9 after Senior Lunch.

This was an informative discussion on Senior Self Defense, Senior Fraud, and Home Safety.

There were many questions and shared experiences which helped notify the public that these issues are real and we all need to be aware. Thank you, Pat!

Please call W.E. Connect/Birch Grove Community Center at 218- 663-7977 with questions or for reservations. Thank you to all who donate, contribute and participate!

Cook County has a vibrant and active community of elders. Each week we will offer Senior News to highlight our senior citizens. This week’s submission is about the Birch Grove Community Center in Tofte courtesy of Brenda Melin, program manager.
