Lost in Las Vegas

I just have to kvetch about the wonderful mail service we have here in the good old USA.

Back in January, I mailed out a letter to a customer requesting the return of a W-9 form to me in a postage paid envelope. That person put the W-9 and post-paid form in the mail on January 24. I needed the form back by the end of January.

Both of the letters–mine sent to him and his back to me—were Grand Marais addresses. I received the return envelope yesterday– February 2!

Imagine my surprise when I noticed the post mark on the letter showing it was sent to Las Vegas on January 27 to be sorted back to Grand Marais. My postage costs were 98 cents, how much did it cost to send the envelope to Las Vegas and back to Grand Marais? Yikes!

My letter traveled 3,840 miles round trip— about two days and eight hours round trip driving time according to Google Maps—unless the letter went in a plane. Considering the letter was addressed Grand Marais to Grand Marais, I think this is ludicrous. No wonder the postal service is having troubles.

Or is this the new normal? I’m glad my letter didn’t stay in Las Vegas!
