The month of September started out with three calls reporting hikers and hunters that were overdue and believed to be lost. Fortunately in all three incidents the missing people were found fairly quickly.
The first individual was Jason Palm, who was bear hunting in the Hovland area, off the Shoe Lake Road. Cook County Law Enforcement was called to report that Palm was missing on September 2 at 7:51 p.m. The Cook County Sheriff ’s Office responded and found the individual who had made his way out of the woods. He was located at 8 p.m.
A group of hikers participating in a class on mushrooming at North House Folk School were reported lost in the Pincushion Mountain Overlook area at 2:06 p.m. on Saturday, September 6. The initial call reported an elderly couple that was two hours overdue.
The Cook County Sheriff ’s Office, Cook County Search and Rescue and North House Folk School staff conducted the search and located the group of seven at 3:04 p.m. All of the parties were back safely at the trailhead by 3:26 p.m.
Another bear hunter, Brandon Greeley, 26, of Winnebago Minnesota was reported lost off of the Pancore Lake Road in the Lutsen area at 4:18 p.m. on Sunday, September 7. His party was camping at Toohey Lake and the reporting party went down the Sawbill Trail to Mike’s Holiday in Tofte to report that Greeley was missing.
The Cook County Sheriff ’s Office, Cook County Search and Rescue and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources responded. Greeley found his own way out at 5:09 p.m.
