Lost camper found safe in Tofte

An elderly man went missing from the Sawbill Lake Campground for a short period of time on Tuesday, August 25 but was fortunately found before a full search was launched.

A call for help came from Sawbill Outfitters at 4:55 p.m. A group of seven paddlers had passed a woman who said her husband had gone looking for firewood earlier and hadn’t returned. The paddlers helped search, calling out for the man with no response, so some of the group paddled out to the Sawbill landing to call for help.

Tofte search and rescue personnel were paged at 5:05 p.m. As they started up the Sawbill Trail, Cook County Law Enforcement was notified that the male party had found his way back to camp.

All searchers were clear by 5:25 p.m.
