Fireworks and dogs don’t mix. As we parked in the driveway of the home we were renting and opened the car door, a small black dog ran over, jumped in and sat shivering in the front seat. She was a pure bred dog, with no tags, but obviously well cared for and looking for home. The 4th of July fireworks in Grand Marais were no longer on the list of our activities.
Instead, we decided to drive around and ask nearby property owners about this little lost dog. After about an hour of doorto door visits with numerous homeowners (all of whom had dogs and expressed sympathy, concern and suggestions) we gave up and drove back to our temporary Grand Marais home.
One of the homeowners had suggested calling WTIP radio so we did. The DJ was happy to help, announcing the dog’s lost but found status right away.
Within two hours, the dog’s owner was knocking on the door, ready to take a now dry and happy dog back home. The next day, one of the neighbors we talked to the night before came back and volunteered to keep the dog until the owner could be found. Happily, we told her of the reuniting of dog and owner.
We were all impressed with the active and personal community connections in Grand Marais, available even on a national holiday. Thanks WTIP and friendly neighbors for a happy ending to this little lost dog story.
