Lorraine D. (Caribou) Wipson, 87, Grand Portage, died Thursday, February 14, 2019 in the Care Center of North Shore Health in Grand Marais.
She was born March 18, 1931 to Peter (Caribou) Stevens and Elizabeth (Flatte) in Grand Portage, where she was raised. Lorraine also lived in St. Louis, MO and Las Vegas, NV.
Lorraine was a member of many organizations in Cook County and attended hundreds of meetings over the years in and around Minnesota. To name a few: Minnesota Chippewa Tribe, Moose Lodge, VFW, the school board, housing and numerous advisory committees. She held two elected seats on the Grand Portage Tribal Council in a 40-year span. Lorraine was also director of the Senior Nutrition Program in St. Louis and Senior Center director in Grand Portage.
She was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church and loved dancing. Lorraine was a fun-loving peaceful person with extreme intelligence, an avid reader who enjoyed flower gardening, feeding her chickadees, loved jewelry, beautiful clothes and the finer things life had to offer.
Lorraine was preceded in death by her husband James and a daughter, June.
She is survived by children Stuart, Rita, Mary; 10 grandchildren; 11 great- grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson, Carter Pehrson. She will be missed by her community, friends, and family. Her extended family is too large to mention but each meant a great deal to her.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 21 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Grand Portage. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery. To sign the online register book visit www.cavallinfuneralhome.com
