Howard Hedstrom, president of Hedstrom Lumber Co., will discuss the history of logging in Cook County, the current situation and outlook for the future at November’s Business Network Luncheon, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30, at The Pie Place, 207 W. Wisconsin St., Grand Marais.
Hedstrom will speak at 11:30 a.m., with lunch to follow. Cost of the luncheon is $15.
Hedstrom recently became president of a new timber industry group called the Federal Forest Resource Coalition. In a news release announcing the opening of an office in Washington, D.C., the coalition described itself as “made up of small and large companies and regional trade associations whose members manufacture wood products, paper, and renewable energy from federal timber resources…. Coalition members employ over 350,000 workers in over 650 mills, with payroll in excess of $19 billion. The Coalition will work with allied industry, conservation, and local government groups to support a growing and sustainable federal timber program.”
Hedstrom said, “The wood products industry depends on healthy forests for our livelihood. For too long, we’ve watched the Forest Service and other federal lands adopt a passive approach to management which threatens our mills and the health of their forests.”
At the Business Network Luncheon, Hedstrom will discuss timber “growth and removal rates,” challenges to Cook County timber management, including “timber types, distances to markets, terrain,” changes in logging practices and a number of other topics bearing on the future of logging in the county and nationally.
Cook County Higher Education sponsors the Business Network Luncheon as a means of giving busy people a way to connect with each other, hear engaging talks on currently pertinent topics, relax and be refreshed.
