For the first two months of 2021, lodging taxes are mostly up across the board when compared to last year at the same time.
And despite the early effects of COVID-19 in 2020, where lodging establishments were closed for well over a month, lodging last year ended at record levels across the county.
From May through December in 2021, rooms were at a premium on the Gunflint Trail, which ended with an overall increase of 14.9 percent over 2019. This year January and February are up 30.4 and 39.7 percent ahead of 2020 for the Gunflint Trail Tourism Association.
Last year the Grand Marais Tourism Association finished 12.6 percent ahead of 2019. This year January was up while February was behind 2020.
The Lutsen-Tofte Tourism Association lodging sales are through the roof for January and February 2021. January reported $78,079.26 compared to $50,805.25 in 2020. February 2021 came in at $75,593.78, far exceeding February 2020 at $50,538.44 lodging tax.
