Locals run well at Tofte Trek

For the second year in a row Duluth’s Adam Swank placed first in the Tofte Trek 10K race held Thursday, July 4 over the muddy trails behind the Birch Grove Community Center.

Swank, a highly accomplished cross country skier and mountain bike racer, ran 39:10.1 to put two minutes between him and second place finisher David Duede of Eagan.

Locally, Cory Berg and Jay Arrowsmith-Decoux placed 4th and 5th in the men’s division, but hot on their heels was Ailee Larson of Lutsen who won the women’s race by a large margin, finishing first with a time of 44:27.7. Larson is preparing for the college cross country season and has raced well all spring in South America where she attended college for a semester.

Cook County High School runner Joey Chmelik finished 8th in the men’s race and he was followed by locals Jared Scheel, 15th; Victor Bohnen 16th; Sean MacDonell 21st; Baiers Heeren 24th; John Twiest 27th; Mark Abrahamson 28th; Nikolai Lane 29th; Rob Fochs 32nd; Corey Belt 43rd; Tom Rider 44th; Tom Crosby 45th; Will Lamb 46th; Joe Buttweiler 50th; Jeff Stoddard 59th; Will Ramberg 61st and his dad, Steve finishing with him in 62nd; Charles Lamb 69th; Mike Crook 73rd; Mark Lawler 77th; with Denny Fitzpatrick, Andy Kern, Joshua Moen and Bill Blank all finishing close behind Lawler.

Audrey Summers placed first in the 18 and under division for ladies with a time of 56:24.1 She was just ahead of cross country teammates Sara Schied and Matea Acero. Melanie Stoddard and Mara MacDonell finished 6th and 7th with Rachel Wieben finishing in 9th place.

In the open ladies division Molly Wickwire finished 10th with Marie Nordahl not far behind in 12th place. Hana Senty, Kelly Senty, and their mother, Laurie Senty finished together in 14th, 15th, and 16th places while Maria Conlan placed 23rd.

In the race walk division Ellen Anderson of Tofte was second with a time of 1:15:40. Suzanne Cable of Grand Marais was 3rd; Halle Lamb of Schroeder was 4th and Hazel Oberholzer of Lutsen was in 8th place just ahead of Jenny Delfs, Grand Marais, who finished in 9th place. Sue Falk, Grand Marais, was 12th, and in 13th and 14th places were Megan O’Neil of Lutsen and Emily Cihlar of Grand Marais. Lutsen’s Amity Goettl and Cook County News- Herald’s Rhonda Silence finished together in the 16th and 17th spots.

Craig Horak of Grand Marais placed 2nd in the Men’s Division of the 10K walk while David Helper of Grand Marais was 4th. Mark Falk of Grand Marais helped with the kids’ races and then walked the 10K with his wife. He finished in 9th place.
