A number of Cook County dirt bike enthusiasts made the trip to Echo Valley Motocross Park in Brookston, Minnesota on May 2, 2010, to take part in the first race of the season.
Jacob Smith, 6, of Grand Marais raced for the first time ever in the 65 cc class, earning 2nd place in the 7 – 9 year olds. He races a 65 KX Kawasaki. Jacob is the son of Lynsey and Chad Smith of Grand Marais. He has honed his skills at a little track at his house and by practicing with racers Devin and Connor Smith of Colvill.
Devin and Connor, along with family “support crew,” also made the trek to Brookston, where Devin celebrated his 18th birthday. Devin finished with a personal best in 3rd place in 14 – 24 year olds 250 cc & 450cc class and 5th place in the 250 C class on a 2003 Honda CR250.
Connor Smith purchased a 2010 Honda CRF250R on Wednesday, just four days before the race. The new bike served him well, Connor won 1st place in 14-24 year old 250cc & 450cc and 1st place in the 250C Class.

Devin and Connor are the sons of Missy and Tony Smith of Colvill.
Adult racer Lance “Boomer” Wilson of Grand Marais also had a great day of racing, placing 1st in the 40+ class on a 2007 Honda CRF450.
Little Cooper Wilson, 4, son of Lance Wilson and Melody McClure of Grand Marais did not race at Brookston, but he did get some practice in on his small motorcyle.
All of the racers and their fans had a great time despite the chilly weather. It was 50 degrees, windy and overcast.
The next race at Brookston is Sunday, May 16.
