Local dirt bike enthusiasts had a long wait to hit the hills this year. Races planned for April and May were not held because there was still snow on the ground at Echo Valley Motocross Park. When the weather finally cooperated, on June 9, 2013, several Cook County racers made the trek to the track in Brookston, Minnesota.

Jacob Smith, 9, of Grand Marais continued his racing career. Jacob started racing at Brookston when he was just 6 years old.

At the season opener, Jacob raced his 2005 Kawasaki 65cc in the 7 – 9-year-old class and earned a 3rd place trophy.

Jacob is the son of Lynsey and Chad Smith of Grand Marais. He spends a lot of time practicing at the little track at their Colvill home, preparing for the larger Brookston track with its turns, corners and moguls. His goal is to earn a first place trophy. If he does, said Lynsey, his dad promised to get him a new dirt bike.

Devin Smith, 21, of Grand Marais raced his 2004 Honda CR250 and received 3rd place honors in the 250cc and 14-24 age class.

Devin is the son of Tony and Missy Smith of Colvill, who enjoy watching all of the Cook County racers at Brookston as well as at MotoCity in Staples, Minnesota.

Also racing from Grand Marais was Isaac Twiest on his 2005 Honda CRF250. He received a trophy for 2nd place in the 250c and Open C divisions—a personal best for the 16-year-old. Isaac has been racing for three years. He is the son of John and Kelly Twiest of Grand Marais.

Lance “Boomer” Wilson of Grand Marais also raced in the 40+ age division on his 2007 Honda CRF450. Biker Dusty Nelson of Grand Marais also made the trip to Brookston. He did not race but had some good practice time on the course.

Racers plan to participate in the next event at Brookston on August 3 – 4. Some local racers also hope to race at MotoCity in Staples, Minnesota on August 10.

Good luck, racers!
