Andy Peterson and Tyson Smith of Grand Marais not only had a blast getting dirty for a good cause in the Mud Run Twin Cities, they also completed the race in excellent time—and raised $800 to combat multiple sclerosis (MS).
According to the MS Society organizers, “Mud Run Twin Cities is a 10K race with boot camp-style obstacles that have been surrounded by or consist entirely of mud.”
Peterson and Smith joined about 1,500 other people and slogged through the mud on Saturday, September 11 at Trollhaugen Ski Resort in Dresser, WI. The men raced in two-person team and dubbed themselves “The Backwoods Boys.” Theyfinished the slippery race with its muddy pools of water (ranging from one- to four-feet deep), cargo net walls, log barriers and more, in 1:40:36—earning seventh place out of approximately 80 in the two-person team division. Out of all the 1,500 racers, The Backwoods Boys finished 50th.
That’s an excellent finish for first-year mud racers, but Peterson said, “We feel pretty good about the race but plan to win it next year when we compete again!”
” To participate the men were asked to raise $100 each, but Peterson said, “We did them one better and raised $800.”
Smith and Peterson ran the race in tribute to Andy’s mother, Margaret “Peggy” Peterson, who has been living with MS for 39 years.
The Mud Run Twin Cities raised more than $250,000 for the MS Society. The donations will fund research and support programs and services for the nearly 10,000 people living with MS in Minnesota and western Wisconsin.
The duo expressed appreciation to a number of local sponsors: Superior Lumber, Steve’s Sports, My Sister’s Place, Grand Marais Golf ‘n Stuff, Johnson’s Foods, Heeren/Swanson Law Firm, Scott W. Smith, Attorney, Mike’s Holiday, Northshore Fitness Center, Caribou Cabin Services, and Gunnar’s, as well as family and friends. They also said thanks to The Shirt Outfitters, which donated the T-shirts announcing that the Grand Marais mud runners were TheBackwoods Boys.
Mud Run Twin Cities 2011 will take place Sept. 10, again at Trollhaugen Resort in Dresser, WI. Registration will be available spring 2011. The Backwoods Boys will be there!
